Cocoa remains one of the most valuable agricultural export commodities in Nigeria, playing a significant role in foreign exchange earnings and agro-industrial development. Nigeria is currently among the top cocoa producers globally, with annual production estimated at 280,000–300,000 metric tonnes. While cocoa cultivation is concentrated in the South West, increasing expansion into parts of the South East and South-South zones has strengthened the supply base for local processing industries.

Despite this production capacity, a large percentage of Nigeria’s cocoa beans are exported in raw form, resulting in limited value addition and missed industrial opportunities.

The establishment of a cocoa processing plant in South Eastern Nigeria—covering Abia State, Anambra State, Ebonyi State, Enugu State, and Imo State—presents a compelling investment opportunity. The region offers strategic advantages including proximity to major commercial hubs such as Onitsha and Aba, access to ports in the South-South region, growing industrial demand, and an expanding consumer market. Additionally, improved logistics networks now allow efficient movement of cocoa beans from producing regions to processing centers in the South East.

The proposed project focuses on the production of alkalized cocoa powder, cocoa butter, and cocoa bean shells (CBS), all of which have strong domestic and international demand. Cocoa processing begins with cleaning and roasting cocoa beans, followed by winnowing to remove shells and produce cocoa nibs. These nibs are then ground into cocoa liquor, which is pressed to separate cocoa butter from cocoa cake.

The cake is further processed into cocoa powder, while alkalization (also known as the Dutch process) is applied to improve color, taste, and solubility, making the powder suitable for beverages, baking, and confectionery applications.

Cocoa butter is a premium product widely used in the manufacture of chocolates, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals due to its smooth texture and stable fat composition. Cocoa powder is used extensively in beverages, confectionery, bakery products, and food processing industries. Cocoa bean shells, once considered waste, now serve as valuable by-products used in animal feed, organic fertilizer, biomass fuel, and in some cases as raw material for extraction of bioactive compounds.

The global cocoa processing market continues to expand, driven by rising demand for chocolate and cocoa-based products. The global cocoa market is valued at over US$15 billion, with cocoa butter and powder commanding significant shares. Locally, Nigeria’s food and beverage, confectionery, and cosmetic industries are growing rapidly, increasing demand for processed cocoa products. At the same time, there is strong export potential to Europe, Asia, and North America, where demand for high-quality cocoa derivatives remains high.

A processing plant with a capacity of 10–20 tonnes of cocoa beans per day can operate efficiently for about 300 working days annually, producing cocoa butter, alkalized cocoa powder, and cocoa bean shells in commercially viable quantities. The integration of multiple product lines enhances profitability by maximizing value extraction from raw cocoa beans.

From a financial perspective, the project offers attractive returns due to high demand, premium pricing of cocoa butter, and multiple revenue streams from powder and by-products. The South Eastern location further strengthens market access, reduces distribution costs to key consumption hubs, and provides opportunities for export through nearby ports.

Beyond profitability, the project contributes to Nigeria’s economic development by promoting local value addition, job creation, and export diversification. It supports cocoa farmers by creating a stable demand for beans and reduces reliance on raw commodity exports. The utilization of cocoa bean shells also improves sustainability by minimizing waste and generating additional income streams.

Establishing an alkalized cocoa powder, cocoa butter, and cocoa bean shell processing plant in South Eastern Nigeria is a strategically viable and profitable investment opportunity. With abundant raw materials, strong domestic and global demand, and favorable logistics, the project is well-positioned to deliver sustainable returns while contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s agro-processing and manufacturing sectors.
