The poultry industry in Nigeria represents one of the fastest-growing segments of the agricultural sector, driven by rapid population growth, increasing urbanization, and rising incomes. Among poultry production systems, layer farming—focused on egg production—offers high potential for profitability, consistent cash flow, and substantial contribution to local food security. South-Eastern Nigeria, with its dense population centers, ready markets, and favorable agro-climatic conditions, presents an attractive region for investment in commercial layer poultry production.

Nigeria is home to over 425 million poultry birds, with the South-East region accounting for a significant share of demand due to densely populated states such as Anambra State, Enugu State, Imo State, Abia State, and Ebonyi State. Eggs are a staple in Nigerian diets, consumed directly, used in baking, and incorporated into other food products. Despite strong demand, domestic egg production has not kept pace with consumption, resulting in widespread reliance on imports and limited supply in urban centers.

Layer poultry farming involves raising hens primarily for egg production. Modern layer operations utilize hybrid breeds such as Lohmann, Isa Brown, and Hy-Line that are selected for high egg yield, disease resistance, and efficient feed conversion. These breeds typically reach peak production at 20–24 weeks of age and maintain optimal laying performance for 12–18 months under proper management conditions.

The farm would be designed to operate on a semi-intensive or fully intensive system, combining controlled housing, automated feeding, and watering systems with appropriate biosecurity measures to minimize disease risks. Each layer house can accommodate approximately 5,000–10,000 birds per cycle, depending on farm scale, with provisions for manure management, ventilation, and lighting to optimize productivity.

Egg production in South-Eastern Nigeria benefits from access to local feed resources, including maize, soybeans, and palm kernel cake, which are readily available from regional suppliers. Incorporating locally sourced feed reduces production costs, ensures consistent supply, and supports regional agricultural value chains.

The business model involves sourcing day-old pullets from reputable hatcheries, rearing them to point-of-lay, and maintaining continuous egg production cycles. Eggs will be collected daily, sorted, graded, and packaged for sale in local markets, supermarkets, restaurants, hotels, and processing plants. Secondary products, such as spent hens for meat and poultry manure for organic fertilizer, provide additional revenue streams and improve overall farm profitability.

Based on current production performance, a layer farm with 20,000–30,000 birds can produce 5–6 million eggs annually, with gross revenue potential reaching tens of millions of naira, depending on market prices and operational efficiency. Production costs are largely determined by feed, labor, housing, and veterinary care, while profitability hinges on minimizing mortality, optimizing feed conversion, and maintaining high-quality egg output.

South-Eastern Nigeria offers distinct advantages for poultry investment, including proximity to high-demand urban centers, a large labor pool, and improved infrastructure for transport and distribution. The region also has government support for agricultural development through grants, training programs, and agricultural financing schemes, which can enhance the feasibility of establishing a modern layer farm.

Environmental and regulatory compliance is critical for sustainable operation. The farm will adopt waste management systems to handle poultry litter, biosecurity protocols to prevent disease outbreaks, and operational practices aligned with national standards for animal husbandry. Health and safety measures for staff and workers will also be integral to operational planning.

Establishing a commercial layer poultry farm in South-Eastern Nigeria is a highly viable and profitable venture. With strong demand for eggs, ready access to feed and labor, and growing population centers, the business can deliver steady revenue, create employment opportunities, and contribute significantly to local food security. Investors who leverage modern poultry management practices, efficient feed strategies, and robust distribution networks are well-positioned to achieve sustainable returns while supporting the growth of the poultry industry in the region.
