South East Nigeria's livestock feed market is one of the most compelling and underserved commercial opportunities in Nigerian agribusiness. The region's five states β Anambra, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, and Enugu β collectively sustain a livestock sector of significant scale: an estimated 4.8 million commercial poultry birds (broilers and layers), approximately 124,800 metric tons of cultured fish, and a large and growing pig farming sector concentrated in Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi and Enugu states. All of these livestock systems require commercial feed as their primary input β and all are severely underserved by regional feed production capacity.
The total monthly commercial livestock feed demand in South East Nigeria is estimated by Foraminifera at approximately 32,000β42,000 metric tons per month (MT/month) in 2026.
Against this, regional feed mill production capacity is estimated at approximately 18,000β24,000 MT/month β a structural supply deficit of approximately 14,000β18,000 MT/month that is met by feed trucked from Lagos, Ibadan, Kaduna, and other distant production centres at significant logistics cost premium. This gap represents the primary commercial opportunity for a new feed mill entrant in the South East.
The competitive landscape is fragmented: the South East has 3 large commercial feed mills and approximately 18 small to medium mills, collectively serving only 43β57% of regional demand. None of the large national feed brands (Coppens, Skretting, Vital Feeds, Durante) operate manufacturing facilities in the South East β all supply the region from distant plants, creating an inherent cost and logistics disadvantage relative to a local manufacturer.
A well-capitalised, professionally managed feed mill established in the South East would have a structural competitive advantage over all imported-from-elsewhere competitors.
The market opportunity is growing rapidly: South East livestock production is expanding at approximately 8β12% per year for poultry and aquaculture, driven by population growth, urbanisation, and the protein demand transition that is increasing per-capita animal protein consumption across the region's growing middle class.
Feed demand is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of approximately 12β16% through 2030, reaching an estimated 56,000β72,000 MT/month by 2030 β implying that even if regional feed production capacity doubles, the supply gap will persist unless investment in new mill capacity significantly accelerates.
